Contributing to Organic Standards

Dr. Hasan Ali Mughal, Founder of Pakistan Organic Association and CEO of Pak Organic, participates in the Validation Workshop on Organic Standards and Framework of Accreditation, organised by CABI in collaboration with the Laudes Foundation on 2–3 July 2024 in Islamabad.

The workshop brought stakeholders together to contribute to the development and validation of organic standards and an accreditation framework for Pakistan. These discussions supported work towards an enabling regulatory environment for the organic sector, including proposed legislation.

Organic Agriculture and Entrepreneurship

Invitation from the SAARC Agriculture Centre to Dr. Hasan Ali Mughal, Founder of Pakistan Organic Association and CEO of Pak Organic, to speak on organic agriculture as a source of entrepreneurship in Pakistan.

The invitation highlights opportunities to share research on organic agriculture through a regional platform. The proposed presentation explored how organic agriculture could create entrepreneurial opportunities and contribute to sustainable development in Pakistan.

The presentation highlighted the strategic role of organic agriculture and the importance of policy support. Discussions considered its potential to strengthen agricultural competitiveness, expand exports, attract investment and support sustainable rural development.

Advocating an Organic Agriculture Institution

Dr. Hasan Ali Mughal, Founder of Pakistan Organic Association and CEO of Pak Organic, meets Federal Minister Ahsan Iqbal and recommends establishing a dedicated Organic Agriculture Institution in Pakistan.

The proposal focused on strengthening research and policy, supporting farmers, encouraging investment and developing international market linkages. The Minister directed further engagement with his team to explore practical steps towards implementation.

Knowledge Exchange with a German Delegation

Dr. Hasan Ali Mughal, Founder of Pakistan Organic Association and CEO of Pak Organic, through Pak Organic, welcomed a German delegation for a programme of academic exchange, research visits and discussions on organic agriculture. Featured in Pakistan Organic Association’s activity portfolio, the programme connected international expertise with universities, research organisations, growers and market participants in Pakistan.

Highlights from the programme at PMAS Arid Agriculture University, including a seminar on organic farming and sustainability and the signing of a memorandum of understanding between the university and the Thünen Institute.

The programme combined learning sessions with discussions on collaboration, creating opportunities to connect research, education and agricultural practice.

Expert Discussions and Institutional Exchange

Participants exchange perspectives on organic agriculture during institutional discussions held as part of the German delegation programme.

The wider programme included a seminar at Allama Iqbal Open University’s Department of Agriculture on organic farming, technology and certification. Activities at NARC included a capacity-building seminar, meetings with PARC and NARC leadership, and visits to research farms and the microbiology department. These exchanges reflect Pakistan Organic Association’s focus on knowledge sharing and institutional connections, championed by Dr. Hasan Ali Mughal, Founder of Pakistan Organic Association and CEO of Pak Organic.

Connecting Research with Markets

Organic retail visits during the German delegation programme provided opportunities to explore products, retail practices and market connections.

Delegates and hosts exchange tokens of appreciation and gather during the programme of visits and knowledge exchange on organic agriculture.

The programme also included an organic trade fair and visits to the Attock Institute of Horticulture, ARL’s biodiversity park and museum, and Qasim Tareen’s organic farm. These visits highlight the connection between research, growers and markets within Pakistan Organic Association’s activity portfolio, alongside the work of Dr. Hasan Ali Mughal, Founder of Pakistan Organic Association and CEO of Pak Organic.

Policy Dialogue and Sector Development

Dr. Hasan Ali Mughal, Founder of Pakistan Organic Association and CEO of Pak Organic, joins participants in an institutional meeting as part of wider efforts to advance organic agriculture in Pakistan.

The wider delegation programme included discussions with officials at the Ministry of National Food Security and Research on policy, legislation and institutional support. NUML’s Trade Not Aid seminar explored the potential of organic agriculture to strengthen exports, generate employment, support rural livelihoods and contribute to food security.
